Summary

The 16th novel by #1 bestselling author Louise Penny finds Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Quebec investigating a sinister plot in the City of Light

On their first night in Paris, the Gamaches gather as a family for a bistro dinner with Armand’s godfather, the billionaire Stephen Horowitz。 Walking home together after the meal, they watch in horror as Stephen is knocked down and critically injured in what Gamache knows is no accident, but a deliberate attempt on the elderly man’s life。

When a strange key is found in Stephen’s possession it sends Armand, his wife Reine-Marie, and his former second-in-command at the Sûreté, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, from the top of the Tour d’Eiffel, to the bowels of the Paris Archives, from luxury hotels to odd, coded, works of art。

It sends them deep into the secrets Armand’s godfather has kept for decades。

A gruesome discovery in Stephen’s Paris apartment makes it clear the secrets are more rancid, the danger far greater and more imminent, than they realized。

Soon the whole family is caught up in a web of lies and deceit。 In order to find the truth, Gamache will have to decide whether he can trust his friends, his colleagues, his instincts, his own past。 His own family。

For even the City of Light casts long shadows。 And in that darkness devils hide。

Soooo good! But that's no surprise, because Louis Penny is one of my favorite writers。 My friend Carol gave me this book, and I'm so glad (thank you!), because it is set in Paris, which gave it a bit of extra appeal for me。 The author has packed a lot into this one novel, and I appreciated it all。 If you like a bit of critique of capitalism along with your novel of terrifying suspense, this is the book for you! An excellent addition to this excellent series。 Some family mysteries are cleared up。 Penny takes on corporate crime this time。 And those Paris locations are spectacular。

Louise Penny did not disappoint in the latest Gamache tale。 Armand and Reine Marie leave Three Pines to visit their children in Paris。 A late night dinner with family, including Armand's godfather Stephen Horowitz ends in Stephen becoming the victim of a hit and run accident setting off a chain of events Gamache and his trusted son-in-law Jean Guy Beauvoir to solve with the help of the Paris police。Penny's style of writing moves me to tears at times as she describes relationships Gamache has wit Louise Penny did not disappoint in the latest Gamache tale。 Armand and Reine Marie leave Three Pines to visit their children in Paris。 A late night dinner with family, including Armand's godfather Stephen Horowitz ends in Stephen becoming the victim of a hit and run accident setting off a chain of events Gamache and his trusted son-in-law Jean Guy Beauvoir to solve with the help of the Paris police。Penny's style of writing moves me to tears at times as she describes relationships Gamache has with his most beloved family。 He is truly one of my favorite literary characters。 。。。more

Love anything Louise Penny

Typical Gamache book - an easy read and fairly enjoyable。 I like the relationships, just not the religious subtext。

Louise Penny is a very good writer who needs to stop seeing conspiracy everywhere。

Louise Penny continues to impress with her brand of writing that combines police procedurals with classic storytelling。 This is what you will find with book sixteen of the immensely popular Inspector Armand Gamache series。 Gamache, who is Chief Inspector for the Surete du Quebec, happens to be in Paris with his wife Reine-Marie。 They are there for the birth of their fourth grandchild。 Anticipation fills the air。 Armand also decides to visit his godfather Stephen Horowitz, who was most instrumen Louise Penny continues to impress with her brand of writing that combines police procedurals with classic storytelling。 This is what you will find with book sixteen of the immensely popular Inspector Armand Gamache series。 Gamache, who is Chief Inspector for the Surete du Quebec, happens to be in Paris with his wife Reine-Marie。 They are there for the birth of their fourth grandchild。 Anticipation fills the air。 Armand also decides to visit his godfather Stephen Horowitz, who was most instrumental in his upbringing。 Horowitz is a billionaire, who would definitely not have any enemies because of his kind nature。 Someone obviously thinks otherwise, as when Stephen, Armand and company leave a rest-aurant, a car head directly for Stephen, running him down, leaving the scene of the accident。 To com-pound things even more, a man is found shot to death in Stephen’s apartment。 Is there a correlation to both accidents? Gamache contacts a valued friend who is the head of the Paris police force。 Rather than being welcomed, he is meant to feel like an outside。 There is much happening, from the top of the Eiffel Tower to clandestine basements harboring damaging secrets。 Gamache seems in over his head at times, wondering who he can trust。 The biggest shocks of all come from revelations within his own family。 ALL THE DEVILS ARE HERE, is one of the best of the series。 Louise Penny continues to be a most enlightened storyteller。 。。。more

If you love these Inspector Gamache books you will love this one。 I can't say too much more for fear of a spoiler or two because frankly the treachery and betrayals and double triple quadruple s/he's a traitor no s/he's not yes s/he is left me actually kind of confused as to who the real good people were (aside of course from Gamache et al) and the long French names do not help。 Madame tresterribleyetchic is bad/good/bad whereas Monsieur Jedeteste is good/bad/good。 So some of it went right over If you love these Inspector Gamache books you will love this one。 I can't say too much more for fear of a spoiler or two because frankly the treachery and betrayals and double triple quadruple s/he's a traitor no s/he's not yes s/he is left me actually kind of confused as to who the real good people were (aside of course from Gamache et al) and the long French names do not help。 Madame tresterribleyetchic is bad/good/bad whereas Monsieur Jedeteste is good/bad/good。 So some of it went right over my head as I focused on Gamache and his (spoiled brat)son who I was glad to see did get smacked upside the head a few times because he deserved it。 Some of it flew by me as I raced breathless through the climactic scenes of danger and terror and (wait for it) betrayals。 I'd have to reread it to get all the detail but it will be well worth it because within a couple of years I will have totally forgotten whodunnit。 。。。more

As always, this book provides a nostalgic feeling for family and both Quebec Canada and France for all while giving all the thrill of a mystery - perfect。

What am I going to do until the next book is released? I feel like I've lost my home。 Another great story and for the first time, we get to know Gamache's son Daniel better, as we've gotten to know Annie better as she had her relationship with Jean Guy。 I missed Three Pines as this was set in Paris, but some of its residents show up。 What am I going to do until the next book is released? This was so good! I'd resigned myself to it being an ok read - until I got to the last third or so and things really picked up。 The action moves quickly from that point on and there are yet more twists which I did not see coming。 I've never read Louise Penny before but after this experience I'd definitely read more of her work! I thought that I might not love this book because it was set in Paris and not Three Pines, but I was wrong。 It was as good as any of the previous books in this series。 I loved spending time with the Gamache family。 Cannot wait for the next one!

The only bad thing about a Chief Inspector Armand Gamache book is when it's over。 Outstanding, as usual, with some twists I didn't see coming。 Can't wait for the next installment!! Loved this departure from Three Pines。 However, with a lot of the same beloved characters。 Nazis, history, under and Paris are all entwined in this latest Penny novel。 The narrator was wonderful!

Louise Penny is such a treasure。 This story, set in Paris, shows her customary intelligence, imagination, and sophistication。 I may have spent too much time Googling French phrasing, places, and pronunciations, but that's half the fun。 If I am any indication, her adoring readers must form a great phalanx leading from Three Pines to Montreal and on to Paris。 I am fairly certain that many of her fine points and observations are intended entirely for me, though I am content to share。 Louise Penny is such a treasure。 This story, set in Paris, shows her customary intelligence, imagination, and sophistication。 I may have spent too much time Googling French phrasing, places, and pronunciations, but that's half the fun。 If I am any indication, her adoring readers must form a great phalanx leading from Three Pines to Montreal and on to Paris。 I am fairly certain that many of her fine points and observations are intended entirely for me, though I am content to share。 。。。more

This Inspector Armand Gamache novel is set in Paris。 While I missed the characters of Three Pines this is a fantastic read。What I liked: Paris is another character in the novel。 There is some backstory here and history that is very interesting。 The story pulled me in right away and never let up。What I didn't like: I missed Myrna, Clara, Gabri, Olivier and Ruth and village life。 This Inspector Armand Gamache novel is set in Paris。 While I missed the characters of Three Pines this is a fantastic read。What I liked: Paris is another character in the novel。 There is some backstory here and history that is very interesting。 The story pulled me in right away and never let up。What I didn't like: I missed Myrna, Clara, Gabri, Olivier and Ruth and village life。 。。。more

All The Devils are Here by Louise Penny is the 16th in the Detective Armand Gamache/Three Pines series。Series Background:    (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books)Armand Gamache and his wife Reine-Marie moved to the small village of Three Pines a few years ago, where they have found peace from their daily struggles, and have found a home among the locals…who often play a large part in the mysteries that surround Gamache。  After being suspended as the  head of the Surete du Quebec, All The Devils are Here by Louise Penny is the 16th in the Detective Armand Gamache/Three Pines series。Series Background:    (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books)Armand Gamache and his wife Reine-Marie moved to the small village of Three Pines a few years ago, where they have found peace from their daily struggles, and have found a home among the locals…who often play a large part in the mysteries that surround Gamache。  After being suspended as the  head of the Surete du Quebec, due having a large amount of drugs hit the street on his watch, he is now back as the Chief Inspector of Homicide。  But he has a lot of enemies。My Synopsis:   (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)Armand and Rene-Marie are in Paris, where Jean-Guy had taken a private sector job。  They are anxiously awaiting the birth of Annie's little girl。  She is due any day。  Armand hopes that perhaps he can repair his relationship with his son Daniel while he is in France。  On their first night, they have a family dinner at a favorite restaurant with Armand's godfather Stephen Horowitz。  On the way home, Stephen is the victim of a hit and run。  The 93-year old is now in a coma。  Armand is sure it was a deliberate attempt on his life。Although the police Prefect Claude Dussault is an old friend of Armand's,  he and Jean-Guy are going to investigate this themselves。  They find a key to an expensive hotel where apparently Stephen had been staying, although why he needed a place other than his apartment is confusing, until they check out the apartment。Meanwhile, Jean-Guy is surprised to find that Stephen may have had something to do with his new job, and he starts to worry about one of the projects he is over-seeing。As things progress in the investigation, it becomes clear that nothing is as it seems。  Armand is going to have to figure out who he can really trust。  So will Jean-Guy。My Opinions:  Another great book in the series。  But up front, I have to admit that I was rather disappointed that the whole book took place in Paris。  It was good, don't get me wrong, but I really missed Three Pines and the characters。  At least everyone is home by the end。The plot was really interesting, and twists were great。  It was rather a complex story, so you had to pay attention, but everything eventually got cleared up。  I was a little annoyed at the beginning when it looked like everyone was attacking Armand's character (again), and in particular his son, but after a while the story just took over, and my frustration left me。The characters are what make Penny's books so good。  This book was really about family, and about relationships between members。  It was nice to finally have the Armand/Daniel issue brought to light and rectified。  The book looked at how sometimes actions or words can be interpreted wrong, and if not discussed at the time, can grow into animosity and years of distance。  Daniel's relationship with his father was a good example。  I also liked that we learned more about the relationship between Armand and his godfather。  The addition of Idola to the family is wonderful。I am looking forward to the next book。。。。and Three Pines。For a more complete review of this book and others (including the reason I chose to read/review this book, author information and a favorite quotation or two from the book), please visit my blog: http://katlovesbooksblog。wordpress。com/ 。。。more

A step out for the Inspector Gamache series。 Based in Paris, sometimes a bit unbelievable, maybe a bit convoluted。 To its credit, the characters of the Gamache family are here, with all of the subtlety we expect。

It wasn't the change of location that I minded, but maybe the mystery itself, the crime, and the many twists and turns that seemed one too many。 That being said, it was still fast-paced and a good summer read。 It wasn't the change of location that I minded, but maybe the mystery itself, the crime, and the many twists and turns that seemed one too many。 That being said, it was still fast-paced and a good summer read。 。。。more
